Helloo New Parents!
Do you ever hold your baby close to you and wonder what they are seeing right now? Can they see your face? Do they notice your smile?
Although we’ve asked ourselves the same thing, especially during those quiet, cuddly moments when your baby’s eyes lock with yours for the very first time. It turns out, newborn vision is an incredible journey all on its own. And the way babies see the world is truly magical.
The Stages of Baby Vision from Blurry Shapes to Bright Smiles
When your little one enters the world, their vision is still a work in progress. They can only see about 8 to 12 inches in front of them, maybe just enough to see your face during a feed or cuddle.
But everything is a blur, and the world appears in black, white, and soft shades of grey. As the weeks go by, their vision begins to change slowly at first, then suddenly in beautiful ways.
Here’s a peek into how your baby’s eyesight grows in the first year of their life:
Newborn to 1 Month:
Their eyes see the world only in black, white, and gray.
They can detect light and movement, but not much detail.
Newborns can focus best on faces, and especially yours!
2 to 3 Months:
Your baby now starts to track moving objects.
They begin to see and differentiate colors, with red being one of the first.
Their eyes start working together, improving depth perception.
4 to 6 Months:
During this time, their color vision becomes sharper.
The hand-eye coordination improves, and the start of reaching and grabbing!
Your baby begins to recognize familiar faces and expressions.
7 to 12 Months:
Their vision becomes more like an adult’s, more developed.
Newborns can see across the room and follow fast-moving objects.
They start to explore and interact more confidently with the environment.
Why Black & White is More Than Just Aesthetic
In those early months, high-contrast visuals (like black and white patterns) are incredibly important. They give your baby's developing eyes something to focus on, helping to build the connections between the eyes and the brain.
And it's not just vision, these visuals help stimulate attention, curiosity, and early cognitive development too. That’s why we believe in introducing high contrast visuals at the earliest stage of birth, in a baby-safe and sensory-rich way.
